James H. Vaughan

While it is possible that James H. Vaughn was a stock broker, I would like to add some facts about him; his sister MaryAnn; his brother Andrew; and, his mother Sarah Vaughn Brazzel. James H. Vaughn was born Feb 2, 1829 in Greene Co, Ind, the son of Beverly and Sarah Unk Vaughn; fought in the Mexican-American War; was discharged in New Orleans and made his way upriver to Jo Daviess Co, Illinois (which is the county that borders Wisconsin...a long way to ship cattle from West Texas). In 1850, James and Andrew were found as boarders in the home of Archibald Asbury. James H. married Elizabeth Monnier on Jun 1, 1856 in Jo Daviess County. In 1860 he is listed as a merchant there. Sarah Vaughn Brazzel came to Jo Daviess Co as a widow, as early as 1856 and soon after her daughter Mary Ann Vaughn joined them. Andrew married in Jo Daviess Co but we are unsure of his location after 1860. Mary Ann married there also and in the 1870s moved to Kansas where she died. Sarah Vaughn Brazzel died in 1861 and is buried in Citizens Cemetery and listed on her stone as mother of James H. James died Apr 16, 1867 in Jo Daviess Co and is buried in Citizens Cemetery. And Hale County, Tx is near Plainview and quite a distance from the Alamo in San Antonio. Stories are wonderful but documents are great for verification.
